Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

Thank you very much for your creative contest entry, we greatly appreciate your willingness to share your ideas and also the time and effort you put into developing a proposal and submitting it to the contest!

This proposal scope includes demonstrating OTEC technology at various scales up to a 50 MW model. The technology is fairly well developed already(IRENA, 2014; DOE, 2013). There are several small (1 MW or smaller) plants have been in operation for many years and 10 MW plants should be operational by now. The technology is fairly well understood. Several companies and countries are evaluating additional projects. The main obstacles include large capital costs, limited places were the ocean is deep enough to meet the temperature requirements, and environmental concerns. Because this technology is well researched and already in the demonstration stage, the current proposal is not actively advancing the technology over what is already being done/considered by governments and private companies.

We encourage you to keep developing your idea. Transfer your proposal to a Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking "Move proposal."

We welcome you to stay involved in the Climate CoLab community: support and comment on proposals that have been named Semi-Finalists and Finalists, and even volunteer to join one those teams if you have relevant expertise. During the voting period, you can also help select the contest's Popular Choice Winner. Climate CoLab will be opening more contests throughout the year and you are welcome to submit your proposal to those contests as well.

Keep up the great work. We hope that by working together, we all can create solutions that wouldn't otherwise be possible.

Sincerely,
Contest Fellows
