| This looks great. I definitely support and look forward to seeing the full answers to the sections re COSTS and EMISSIONS. Good luck. |

| I am Benson Chiumia, the Project Manager for Nkhata Bay Natural Way (NBNW) project which was funded be Big Lottery Fund (BLF) Grant run by Temwa Community Organization in northern Malawi. I have read the proposal submitted by ITF and I fully agreed that it is a strong proposal and would greatly help the people and the ecology of the region. Temwa as an organization has worked on smart agriculture and forestry for ten years and we have the capacity to benefit from as well as manage the fund if this project were successfully achieved. Malawi as a country has a massive deforestation and mismanagement of environment problem, hence it is a challenge we are working very hard to combat at the present time. Please approve this proposal as it has the full support of our community here in Malawi, southern Africa. |

| Proposal contributor Dear Kitty and Benson, Thank you very much for your comments and encouragement. Here are the costs associated with implementing our Treeconomy and how we think of phasing out in the long run. In a second comment, the data about reduction in emissions. Kind regards, Alice - Treeeconomy Team/International Tree Foundation
Implementing “Treeconomy” in 20 countries will imply a cost of $20 million a year. Time line: The first cohort of 5 countries starts in Y1, reaches full capacity (200,000trees) in Year 4, and continue in Y18 planting 33 million trees per country in total. The second cohort of 5 countries starts in Y2, reaches full capacity (200,000 trees) in Y5, and continues to Y18 planting 31 million trees per country in total. The third cohort of 5 countries starts in Y3, reaches full capacity (200,000 trees) in Y6, and continues to Y18, , planting 29 million trees per country in total. The fourth cohort of 5 countries starts in Y4, reaches full capacity (200,000 trees) in Y7, and continues to Y18, planting 27 million trees per country in total. Total planting in 20 countries by Y18 is 600 million trees. Agroforestry follow up and development will continue in all 20 countries for a further 5 years to Y23.

| Proposal contributor How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels? The scope is potentially enormous. The most simple version of “Treeconomy” model in which 200 tree nurseries per country are created in 20 different African countries will produce 10,000 seedlings for planting, at 50 trees per hectare, by small-holder farmers would lead to a cumulative total, over a period of 15 years, of 600 million trees sequestering 12 million tonnes of carbon at 20kg of carbon per tree per year. But the benefits go far beyond carbon. The same model would help to restore 12 million hectares of land, and directly improve the livelihoods of 6 million farming families. |

| Hi, Why is your suggested planting density 50 trees per hectare? Thanks best regards |

| Having worked with small-scale tree nurseries in West and Central Africa for many years, I came to realise that the only way to encourage farmers to plant trees is to make good quality planting material available, at affordable prices and close to their farms. However, capacities to select and propagate trees, manage nurseries and commercialise tree seeds and seedlings needs to be built at this level. Therefore, support to decentralised systems of seed and seedling supply is needed. For all the above reasons, I strongly support this project idea!

| The value of this approach is that it facilitates communities to make their own decisions about which tree species to plant in important restoration and (other) agroforestry-based initiatives. It also creates a market for tree planting material - communities producing trees that growers actually want to plant - an essential issue often neglected in development projects on tree planting, |

| Last year's contest had similar proposal titled "trees fro food security". Link to it is below.

| I am puzzled by the semi-final evaluation which suggest that the judges think this is an initiative based in Asia when it is clearly an initiative that will take place in the continent of Africa, initially in 20 countries. Another comment suggesting incorrectly that this is not based on existing successful practice perhaps suggests that the evaluation relates to one of the other proposals??? |
