Pitch

Landscape harvesting of water is the solution for water shortage in Kenya and Horn of Africa.

Description

Summary

An estimated 13.25% of the Kenyan population was food insecure in 2008 as per the census. The situation deteriorated in 2013 due to failure of rains in the rainy season(march-may) followed by floods and tropical storms in the last quarter of 2013.

It is very important for us to discuss water harvesting and micro catchment management because climate change is affecting African farmers who are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The impacts of climate change threatens to exacerbate the existing land degradation problem and add to the vulnerability of Africans to food insecurity.

African population is growing while food production is declining. in the next 100 years, more than 40% of all African population will be food insecure if we continue relying on rainfall for food production.

Importance of Landscape water harvesting

  1. Restoration and improvement of natural resource base
  2. increase the quantity and quality of water
  3. make water available for irrigation and animal consumption.
  4. Accelerate green revolution in the agriculture sector
  5. creates opportunity for aquaculture and hydroponics farming

What actions do you propose?

Irrigation is the key to food security in Africa, but where is the water to irrigate?Yet every year, there are floods somewhere in Kenya.

Who will take these actions?

Anybody can give suggestions in this section.

Where will these actions be taken?

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

What are other key benefits?

What are the proposal’s costs?
