Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

The Climate CoLab adaptation contest team appreciates the time that you took to submit this proposal. The judges consider this a novel idea, and also liked the spirit of this proposal. However, there seems to be some conceptual issues, and they are: (a) it shifts the burden of cost on the victim of climate change and not the emitters, and (b) it waits for disasters to strike rather than prevent them by adapting. The judges are also concerned that this locally-based microfinance approach would not be able to raise enough capital to effectively respond to a large-scale disaster. Have you calculated what level of funding this approach is likely to raise in a given community and whether that amount would be able to significantly contribute to rebuilding local infrastructure post-disaster? Furthermore, are you proposing this approach for all vulnerable communities, or is there a cut-off point at which the ration between risk and return makes this approach unworkable? Providing something more detailed in these areas would make this proposal much stronger. The judges believe that your proposal has a lot of potential if you expand on this current idea and evolve it. While your proposal is not advancing to the semi-finals this year, the contest team wishes you the best of luck in your endeavors and would love to see a proposal from you next year incorporating this feedback.
