SUBJECT: Climate CoLab Judging Results

Proposal: Urban Scale: Chemosynthetic Management of the Water/Energy/Nutrient Nexus (WENN)

Thank you for participating in the 2015 Climate CoLab Atypical Ideas for Climate Neutrality contest, and for the time you spent in creating and revising your entry.

The Judges have strongly considered your proposal in this second round of evaluation, and have chosen to not advance it as a Finalist for this contest.

We, the Judges and contest Fellows, are truly grateful for your contribution to the Climate CoLab and for your commitment to address climate change.

Your proposal was intriguing in that it pulled together many different elements of creating a solution. However, the technology as it related to Somerville's problems was not clear. In addition, digging up city streets is a major obstacle for any community.

We encourage you to keep developing your work. Transfer it to the Proposal Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal”.

We hope you will stay involved in the Climate CoLab community. Please support and comment on proposals that have been named Finalists and vote for which proposal you would like to be nominated as the contest’s Popular Choice Winner.

SUBJECT: Your proposal has been selected as a Semi-Finalist!

Congratulations! Your proposal, "Urban Scale: Chemosynthetic Management of the Water/Energy/Nutrient Nexus (WENN)" in the Atypical Ideas for Carbon Neutrality contest, has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round.

You will be able to revise your proposal and add new collaborators if you wish, from July 1st until July 16, 2015 at 23:59pm Eastern Time.

Judges' feedback are posted under the "Evaluation" tab of your proposal. Please incorporate this feedback in your revisions, or your proposal may not be advanced to the Finalists round. We ask you to also summarize the changes that you made in the comment section of the Evaluation tab.

At the revision deadline listed below, your proposal will be locked and considered in final form. The Judges will undergo another round of evaluation to ensure that Semi-Finalist proposals have addressed the feedback given, and select which proposals will continue to the Finalists round. Finalists are eligible for the contest’s Judges Choice award, as well as for public voting to select the contest’s Popular Choice award.

2015 Climate CoLab Judges

This is a great blue sky, creative idea for application to an urban environment; congratulations for bringing it to the competition. Technical and financial feasibility are strong concerns here. It is not clear if that technology has been demonstrated for this application, which is a significant barrier to overcome. Surely the use of sewage to create energy is an attractive potential application of the technology. The presentation is hard to follow and could be condensed considerably.

Interesting idea--this would require much coordination with the State and agencies (MWRA).

Thank you for the feedback. The demonstration of the chemosynthesis technology, on a city scale, as never been attempted yet the oxyhydrogen reaction in algae is well known in the plant physiology field. The company Kiverdi is currently producing high-end bio-oils with the technology. This WENN proposal is an advancement of the scope of use not an actual advancement of the biology. As to the involvement of State and National agencies, this can be a good thing for Somerville as those agencies may wish to offer sizable grant funding for the initial trial installation of the WENN equipment. I've enjoyed working on this challenge as the urban area related climate change mitigation and adaptation challenges will be a major determining factor in our efforts to avoid the worst case scenario(s). Your openness to 'atypical ideas' may open a path many of the worlds' cities might wish to follow. Kindest regards, Michael

Hello Annalyn, The problem of dropping text/revisions has happened again. Please compare what I copied and pasted into a...final version.... Google Doc....(which I created as a last chore on that proposal after coordinating all info on both of the above proposals) as opposed to what ended up in the CoLab Docs.
