Member Profile
Rob Watson is Chief Science Officer of EcoHub Inc. An international leader in market transformation and green buildings, Watson is known as the “Founding Father of LEED.” Under Rob’s direction, LEED became the largest and fastest-growing international standard by which green buildings are measured. Author Thomas Friedman calls Rob "one of the best environmental minds in America."
EcoHub has developed a disruptive technology and business model that will revolutionize the global materials management industry by separating, diverting and recycling up to 95% of municipal mixed waste, without the need for consumers to separate. Global implementation of the EcoHub model could eliminate 5% of world GHG emissions.
As Chief Science Officer of EcoHub, Watson leads the company’s efforts to ensure that materials are put to their highest and best use after being discarded, as well as ensure all processes are fully closed loop and performing optimally. Rob is currently spearheading the creation of SWEEP, the Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Protocol, which is designed to identify and reward leaders in sustainable materials management.
Prior to these efforts, Rob launched EcoTech International to implement cutting edge LEED projects in the US and in China. Watson was a Senior Scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) for 21 years directing the International Energy and Green Building programs.
Among numerous international awards for his work, he is the 2013 recipient of the International Conservation Award from the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. In 2011, he was a semi-finalist in the international Zayed Energy Future Award for Lifetime Achievement and was profiled on CNN International. Watson was the first foreigner honored for Green Building Innovation by the Chinese Ministry of Construction in 2005 and received the first lifetime achievement award ever given by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2002.
