Summary
VICI Development is an enabling organization working for the development of local Bamboo Societies. These Agrarian Collectives/CoOps will educate on bamboo cultivation, bamboo processing and create multiple streams of income for the members from fuel sales, building material sales, furniture sales, textile and fiber sales, food sales.
Bamboo is one of the highest biomass per acre plants and is useful for a wide range of basic needs.
The current vicious cycle in LDCs is poverty leads to deforestation for fuel. The process is inefficient (less than 10% of the biomass energy harvested is put to useful purpose), dirty (17% of anthropogenic CO2 comes from "forest use"), and exacerbates disasters (land slides, soil loss, etc).
By forming Bamboo Societies (CoOps) and organizing the farmers into a larger group (similar to Ocean Spray for Canberries ), we aim to create a virtuous cycle -- create income from farming bamboo and industrially processing it into fuels (charcoal and liquid fuels - cuts biomass consumption by 80%) and educating the customers on proper use (adding flues to rocket stoves - saves additinal 1/2) with a net CO2 sink! In addition, the sustainably harvested biomass can be used for other purposes to create long term stable income.
What actions do you propose?
We are looking for help in many areas - legal organization of collectives, start up funding for Bamboo Societies, mentorship on management, operation and processing techniques.
