SUBJECT: Climate CoLab Judging Results
Proposal: Solar Somerville - Some Assembly Required
Thank you for participating in the 2015 Climate CoLab Atypical Ideas for Carbon Neutrality contest, and for the time you spent in creating and revising your entry.
The Judges have strongly considered your proposal in this second round of evaluation, and have chosen to not advance it as a Finalist for this contest.
We, the Judges and contest Fellows, are truly grateful for your contribution to the Climate CoLab and for your commitment to address climate change.
We encourage you to keep developing your work. Transfer it to the Proposal Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal”.
While your proposal is intriguing, it is an issue that many other public and private organizations are already working on. We also have concerns--and would have wanted to see suggestions on--code compliance and grid connectivity. We hope plug-and-play solar technology comes to the market, and we will eagerly look to facilitate its adoption in Somerville.
We hope you will stay involved in the Climate CoLab community. Please support and comment on proposals that have been named Finalists and vote for which proposal you would like to be nominated as the contest’s Popular Choice Winner.
If you have questions, please contact the Climate CoLab staff at admin@climatecolab.org
Keep up the great work. And thank you again for being a part of this mission to harness the world’s collective efforts to develop and share innovative climate change solutions.

This is an interesting idea--expanding a traditional solarize campaign to use more community involvement.
I like the Do-It-Yourself thinking, but consider putting your energies into an area that requires little technical expertise but still costs solar firms a bundle: gathering clients! It's true that labor costs now outweigh the cost of solar equipment; however, the danger of installations on triple deckers (e.g. how to get the panels up there, properly ballasted, and connected to wiring in the building). I can see the attorneys sharpening their pencils now. What if the city were to vet a small handful of solar installers and instead of building installation kits, you rounded up neighborhoods full of triple deckers to be assessed? As an example, review the Solarize program at the Mass Clean Energy Center.
