The wood from old homes that were used as studs could be recycled and used to make Cross Laminated Timber Panels (CLT).

Description

Summary

The wood from old homes that were used as studs could be recycled and used to make Cross Laminated Timber Panels (CLT).  CLT is often made using softwoods such as spruce.  A softwood is only called a softwood based on the type of seed it has.  It is not based on the actual hardness or density of the actual wood.

Category of the action

Building efficiency: Physical Action

What actions do you propose?

CLT is often made using softwoods such as spruce.  A softwood is only called a softwood based on the type of seed it has.  It is not based on the actual hardness or density of the actual wood.  Spruce is and has been used to make studs which make up the framing of single family homes in the Western hemisphere.  However, once homes become old and are abandoned for various reasons, the wood is thrown out with all the other materials.  The wood from these homes could be used to make CLT panels.  It does not matter how knotty the wood is because the wood is placed in perpendicular layers.  With thorough research this will prove to be a good idea.

Who will take these actions?

Government environmental agencies should enforce that this is how the wood from old homes should be recycled.

Where will these actions be taken?

This can take place anywhere, where stick framing is used in buildings.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

There are studies on CLT that currently exist that will show the advantages of using Cross Laminated Timber such as:

and

What are other key benefits?

If CLT panels are used in construction then  less heat island effect will occur in cities.

What are the proposal’s costs?

Further feasibility studies will have to be done to find out the exact costs of this proposal.

Time line

I think this proposal can be effective within the short term, 5-15 years.
