Dairy Goats Husbandry for Improvement of Community Livelihoods and Biodiversity by Friends of Usambara
Pitch
The pitch of the project is dairy Goats Husbandry for Improvement of Community Livelihoods and Biodiversity Conservation of Usambaras
Description
Summary
1. Intellectual Merit/ Logical Approach of the Proposed Activity
The project will be implemented by intellectual staffs holding Degrees in Livestock production and Forest management (Livestock and Forest Officers) also Livestock/Forest management diploma holders will assist at village level in-coordination with Village Natural Resource Committees for targeted villages. The project will be coordinated by the Animal Scientist holding Masters of Science in Tropical Animal Production.
2. Broader Impacts Resulting from Proposed Activity
Introduction of dairy goat husbandry is made as primary alternative to curb the identified stress towards the reserve and house hold economic changes, Biodiversity conservation through introduced alternative source of domestic needs such as food and income making opportunities.
The initiative is indeed focused to the community as an alternative for the resources needs (Milk, meat, manure and income making opportunity) from the reserves to reduce biodiversity threats in the Magamba Nature reserve Lushoto Tanga Tanzania .
Dairy goat husbandry at house hold level will have positive results for increasing agricultural production and productivity from the animal manure produced by goats and food from goat’s milk and meat, therefore enhance livelihood improvement.
Using pre-designed approach of passing the siblings to the next household, community will enjoy the fruit of the distributed goats and in a moment good number of community members will have dairy goats for food, manure and income making. The support will be in line with awareness for the role and responsibility of community as key stakeholder in the management to ensure the resource of Magamba Nature reserve being conserved; this will be made through capacity building and awareness given by the project. By doing that, each member will have a role to play in the management and conservation aspiration of the Magamba Nature Reserve eventually sustainable conservation of biodiversity.
What actions do you propose?
The project purpose is to promote the involvement of the local communities in the conservation and sustainable management of the natural resources and bio-diversity of the Eastern Arc Mountains and to assist them in benefiting from such conservation and sustainable management. Also the project is designed to reduce pressure impacting the Magamba Nature Reseve through illegal and fire based hunting and honey harvesting by increasing alternative dairy goat production for food security and livelihoods improvement from the dairy goat husbandry.
Dairy goat production is a tangible alternative given to the community. This will increase commitment to the community on conservation of MNR biodiversity. However from the awareness community feel as their role and responsibilities towards the conservation of Magamba Nature reserve. Through dairy goat production manure will be produced hence the community will use the manure to increase soil fertility to their gardens and farms thus increase soil productivity for crop production.
Indeed, provision of the alternatives will increase community response upon biodiversity conservation of Eastern Arc Mountains as stakeholder in the Magamba Nature Reserve KNR conservation. The project will put more emphasis to underprivileged from participatory gender balanced group formation being made from each village. However the project point of view is sustainability and immediate return to the beneficiaries, where by each member will contribute from the support as in kind before. This will initially increase community response upon the implementation of the project and open room of role and responsibilities biodiversity conservation of Magamba Nature Reserve , hence sustainable conservation and management of Usambara Mountains Ecosystem and house hold economic changes from the income making alternative.
IV. METHODOLOGY FOR IMPLEMENTING THE PROJECT
The project will be implemented by fully involvement of the community as key stake holders of the project. From initial point the community will be sensitized on the role and objective of the project and the anticipated results of the intervention.
However for the sustainability community will have a role and responsibilities to make the project be successful, through their in-kind contribution and responsibilities upon the conservation and management of the Magamba Nature Reserve The community will provide construction materials for the dairy goats housing as their contribution to the project.

V. KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
The success of the project is basically made from the positive response of the community as beneficiaries from the project site. Available experts from the District to the village level who are responsible to provide extension services upon the available livestock production and forest management, working equipment such as transport which will assist staff to attend and work with communities in the project area. The favourable climate for the survival of livestock will encourage the production of dairy goats, hence sustainability and success of the project to the community.

VI. DESCRIPTION OF BENEFICIARIES
The project is basically focused to community members adjacent to reserve, household from the 6 villages chakeche, Kwesimu, Magamba, Kwembago,Irente and Migambo will immediate get direct benefit from the support of dairy goats, however the trend will progressively increase from the model of support to the beneficiaries. This will be made through redistribution of kids to the next household; hence more farmers will get benefit from the support. This will be possible because goats are high prolific animals that is one goat (doe) can give birth (kidding) 2 kids at once and three times per 2 years.
Where will these actions be taken?
Based on the applied approach of participatory, where selected group members will have to supply kids to other members of the community therefore, group’s number will increase in multiples per annual. This will continue such that majority will get benefit from supplied kids. High production of dairy as high prolific animals is an opportunity therefore; within short period of production large number of people in the community will have the dairy goats.
However available extension officers from the wards and villages whom will keep on advise key beneficiaries on proper keeping of the dairy goats and conservation of biodiversity for sustainable development.
How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?
