I am retired from teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and am now very involved in 350Madison. There is also an active Citizens Climate Lobby here, and my daughter is active with the brand new CCL in Flagstaff AZ. As a (non climate related) scientist, I feel a responsibility to keep up as far as possible with findings relevant to the fight against climate change, and in particular the dangers posed by tar sands excavation and transportation across land and water, and to use this to inform our piece of this struggle.

I believe it is very important for people working against climate change to combat passivity and negativity. We face huge odds against fossil fuel money of course (not going to change those minds), but it is very important to reach those who see the danger but feel hopeless about the possibility of really changing things for the better. This again is where science can come in, to make sure people understand that there are paths which can lead us to less disastrous climate change, and even a relatively positive future for the planet; also to encourage people to see that  it makes a difference what we  choose to do, whether through publicity, marches, petitions, civil disobedience, direct action, or through the electoral process.
