Climate solution no 1: If we could help build a social movement that would create public pressure. Not yet another campaign, a movement. And not just in one country. Globally. Tool needed: An open source ‘Climate Safety Toolbox’ which enable co-operation and knowledge exchange, similar to Climate Colab, but where news, culture, ranking and benchmarking are the drivers, and in a ‘wrapping’ which is appealing to the public In an act of civil disobedience, biologist, author and mother Sandra Steingraber along with 11 others recently blocked business at a Inergy gas storage facility near Seneca Lake, New York in USA. On 18 April 2013, she was sentenced to 15 days in jail for her trespass. “I trespassed. It was an act of civil disobedience. Because I have deep respect for the rule of law, which Inergy company does not, I am willing to go to jail,” she said to the court before her sentencing. We need many more Sandra Staingrabers. The current planetary emergency with threats of a runaway greenhouse effect justifies civil disobedience and direct action, because at the moment, as a species, we are pretty busy doing the wrong things. For instance, as we speak, 1,200 new coal-fired power plants are being proposed worldwide, three-quarters of them in India and China. Companies are spending the best part of $1 trillion a year (comparable to the US defence budget, or more than $100 for every person on the planet) to find and develop yet more fossil fuel reserves. And this happens while scientists keep warning us that we have no hope of holding the rise in the planetary temperature below two degrees unless global emissions peak by 2015. This situation is probably why 81 percent of 1,660 sustainability experts see activism as central to further progress on the carbon emissions problem. The history of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela suggests that the path of resistance has often been essential to needed social change. We need to build a global social movement for sustainability - we need to build public pressure for an energy reform. It could the only way to make changes happen fast enough. The challenge is how to get people to care about future generations. We need to figure that one out - quickly. Watch this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zfinOCgRQ0 The work of 350.org is immensely important in that respect, in particular for America - the five percent of the worlds population who allegedly are responsible for 50 percent of the worlds pollution - and where three percent of them, nine million people, are employed in the fossil fuel industry. Maybe we should all just join 350.org. But the rest of the world needs to step in too, and for 350.org to move from being a campaign to becoming a movement and also to become truly global, it needs to find a way to co-ordinate all this and speak in many more different languages in order to reach people. So we are missing something. 
We — individual citizens of the planet — must create a kind of ‘open source’ tool which can enable us to join forces and exchange knowledge by the help of the Internet. We do it already, but it is not efficient enough. For instance, there is a .biz and a .info available for domainnames, but there is no.climate. Why not? The field of sustainability information providers badly need that. And then we need to create a hi-tech, online and interactive, global platform for Climate Safety information, co-ordination, communication, monitoring, filtering, linking, ranking, benchmarking, and voting. With this Climate Reform Tool we make visible a social, popular and global climate movement which is already here today, and in a shared effort we create a peaceful climate safety revolution based on our own individual actions, purchases and choices as consumers, which first of all means: an energy reform that entirely replaces fossil fuels with renewable energy. And we make this transition happen much faster than anyone thought it was possible. In the process we also need to elect a person who will be our Global Leader for Climate Safety, a spokesperson for the global climate movement. This could be the main line-out of my vision for how to solve this planetary emergency. • We build a popular movement by creating awareness In order to enhance and strengthen the movement inwards:

 • We find a spokesperson • We go into action by starting with ourselves. As consumers we create pressure and demand for carbon neutral products, and based on our individual action, we transform the energy sector • Consumer awareness and pressure makes companies understand they need to take sutainability seriously if they want to stay in business. Public awareness and pressure also makes policians understand that they need to listen if they want to stay in power. This is of course easier said than done. But it can be done. Hi James, yes - thanks! I was maybe too fast. Haven't really been around in all corners yet. It just look to me as if my ideas are yet too unspecific to fit in the frame under "Contest". But I can try and see if I can fit it in, somehow. I am not a developer, I am just a person who thinks a lot about these matters. I don't have the technical knowhow to actually carry out those ideas I am talking about. So I was hoping there'd maybe be someone out there who could see the point and would like to create a team.

One thing I've noticed is a lack of qualified advice out there for free. Because the problem of global warming is so huge there should be funding available to pay an atmospheric physicist, biologist and engineer to go over ideas and suggestions as needed. Have a paid person in charge who goes over everything and asks the experts about what he/she doesn't understand. Publicly state which projects should get funded and advocate for good projects. You thought it up, you know we need it, you do not want to do it, I think you should do it.

Hi Charles, That's actually what we're doing! All proposals will be reviewed by Fellows who are specialists in their field, and the top ranking proposals will be reviewed also by expert Advisors. The Fellows and expert Advisors endeavor then to provide proposals with feedback to help them in the development of their ideas. This will be taken to a whole new level at our Crowds & Climate conference on November 6 & 7, where contest winners will present before and receive feedback from implementers so that the idea can be realized.
