Energy Supply 2018
Fossil fuels constitute the largest share of the world’s total primary energy supply today, and the most consumed fuel type for electricity generation worldwide. As a result, the electricity generation sector is the world’s single largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Globally, policy efforts are being made to increase and improve access to electricity supplies. Given the electricity generation sector’s reliance on carbon-intensive sources, an increase in access will lead to significant GHG emissions growth unless electricity generation sources are diversified to include cleaner options or greenhouse gas mitigating technologies become commonplace and energy efficiency practices are enacted. How can we most effectively minimize emissions from energy generation around the world, while still enabling the sector’s growth, and energy access for those in need?
