As weather changes in cycles, drought is going to happen. Population continues to grow and the tipping point is when a large population center runs out of fresh water. That tipping point will be too late to respond. Rather than get to that disaster it would be good to build drought solutions a few years ahead of the very likely disaster. Two guideways from East Texas where it rains more than 60 inches a year to the Colorado front range would accomplish moving water rights from the Mississippi River to Los Angeles. If more physical water is needed than say three of these front range systems we can also transport water then entire distance refilling Lake Mead in the process along the way. Desal seems like the ultimate answer if we had unlimited nuclear reactors and unlimited funds to build,fuel and operate them but we don't. Desal also creates a mountain of salt or an ocean of intense bio-damaging brine so it is only a patch. It attracts the consulting class as it pays big money to recommend massive spending projects. PV solar panels along the route of a 1,800 mile guideway system would be enough solar farm to power very efficient guideway vehicles rolling metal wheels on a precision ground metal surface. Preparing for the crossover when population exceeds drought levels of fresh water should be our focus. We are there on population in the Great Southwest. Lake Mead has a bath tube ring. |
 Hari Krishnaa Aug 23, 2017 06:14 | It Is Interesting to see that majority of the contest proposals we have received so far aim at using technology (Information and Communication)to promote adaptation. That's wonderful. But I'm trying to understand why we have far fewer proposals that are not technology-based! Is It be because, we tend to think, Innovation is equal to Information and communication? Or, Is it because we are not able to reach out to those who are promoting adaptation and transforming lives through field level practices and Innovations?. There must be a million ground level Innovations happening every day in the practice of adaptation in the world. Let's hope we can reach out to such Innovators and bring diverse fragrances to the Climate Co-Lab platform!!! |

 Bijan Fallah Sep 14, 2017 01:32 | The problem of climate change needs scientists who can follow their own plans for a long period of time. In my field (climate science ), researchers have to work on preproposed projects and usually less than 3 years. How could they find answers if they do not have a safe job or the freedom to follow their own path? From my experience with industry, they do not take us serious enough. They do not even know what we do or are able to. Most of my colleagues go out of academy after some years of research .... This prize gives us a little hope to do what we want to... Thanks for that :) |

It is extremely important in climate science to have long term data, and we thank you for reaching out to Climate CoLab to continue your research and make it known among more people. |

We thank the fellows and Climate CoLab researchers who have been so integral to this contest and to helping teams such as mine shape our thinking and writing. I just realized that this project is the longest I've worked on any social enterprise project idea contest. Perhaps it is because instead of one physical solution and the inherent risks of production and commercialization, my team (+ Aadhithya S) came up with a multi-pronged approach and we can have a shot at democratizing online tools and preparedness training against natural hazards.
