The strongest reason to think global warming is related to human activity is carbon (dioxide) green house gas (GHG) emission. The carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere has increased from below 300 ppm level before the industrial revolution to more than 400 ppm now. Burning fossil fuel annually produce about 33 billion tons of carbon dioxide (9 billion ton carbon content), about 1.3 ton of carbon for each person on earth. Reduce emission and carbon sequestration are two reasonable methods. In addition to energy supply, there can be a contest for carbon sequestration also.

I entered this energy supply contest with OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) under the title thermonuclear fusion energy converter on earth. At this time, energy supply technologies are much more mature than carbon sequestration technologies. Unfortunately, most renewable energy supply approach ignore the most abundant renewable energy resource on earth, ocean thermal energy. Existing ocean thermal energy is more than two years of solar radiation reaching earth. Solar radiation reaching earth is about 5000 time human energy need. Unlike unreliable solar photovoltaic (not at night) or wind (unpredictable), OTEC is available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. OTEC generating capacity is more than enough for total human energy need. The space provided in the contest is not enough to describe my OTEC proposal adequately. I hope there are interested person willing to contact me using my email address jameslau2@gmail.com to get more complete information. I hope this contest can help attract the attention of potential energy profit seekers and cause almost all fossil fuel suppliers to get out of their business.

Help is needed to revise proposal device for monitoring electricity use. Ventilation of premises. Please read it and write what is unclear about it. The main idea is that electricity production transmission and consumption create whirlpools that imbalance weather i.e. air in both places. Since air is common for the whole planet we can install regulated ventilation that would create waves i.e. movement of air into the building and out of the building which restore balance.

Measurements of electricity, length, weight, temperature are based on water.

I think the judging committee make a serious mistake by not moving the OTEC proposal into the next round. The quoted reason for this decision is there are OTEC efforts in the world and the proposal is not advancing the technology. The judges obviously never try to learn about real OTEC constraints and fail to see the attempt to try to advance OTEC technology in the proposal.

The cold water pipe has been mentioned as the most costly and critical for OTEC. This proposal suggested to use vertical cold water pipe attached to submerged neutral buoyancy OTEC plant main structure. Neutral buoyancy structure will not need to move up and down with the floating OTEC plant and forced very high strain/stress between the very large inertia floating portion and the cold water pipe. The proposed bolt and nut main cold water pipe construction process is compatible with ocean vertical assembly.

The simple heat exchanger design is much more cost effective than flat plates with small channels for ocean water and working fluid. The very large ocean water flow rate make the combined ocean water flow cross sectional area very large. The heat exchanger need to have large volume to allow for large volume ocean water flow and long enough dwell time for heat conduction across the heat exchanger wall.

There are other aspects of this proposal I need much more space to mention. Actually the contest format is not enough for me to include more necessary details. If the contest want to promote ideas with no technical detail, the contest cannot promote any realistic proposal. Details are important.

My last discussion entry mentioned that global warming (climate change) is closely related to fossil fuel use. Renewable energy need to have enough capacity to meet global need. OTEC with the most abundant renewable energy resource is the best possible technology. People already working on OTEC need better design concept to make OTEC cost effective. This contest should support all meaningful OTEC proposal.
