Groundwater recharge measures to mitigate climate change impact
Description
Ground water recharge measures to mitigate climate change impact
Over extraction of ground water has its impact on climate change and vice versa too. Year after year since the second half of the last century, the farmers in India are digging deeper and deeper to get water for farming. This is unmatched with the efforts to recharge the same ground water. Diminishing surface water storage facilities add to the woes. In such a situation it is worthwhile to examine (i) whether it is possible to recharge the ground water using the runoff water during rains (ii) whether the existing dry deep borewells can be used to recharge (iii)whether there has to different kinds of recharge structures to suit the soil condition and (iv) how long it would take to realize the result of such recharge by the water users? This is proposed as a pilot project in a selected couple of villages facing acute shortage for ground water and lack facilities for surface water storage.
The activities proposed are:
(i) identify ground water over exploited villages
(ii) study the terrain along with technical experts and get technical suggestions on the proposed plan
(iii) locate the dried borewells by working along with the community and educate the community about the proposed plan
(v) with the participation of the community, make necessary structures to recharge water through the boreholes.
This exercise should help recharge the ground water resource for the community and enable water security for life and livelihood.
If this pilot project succeed further scaling up with the involvement of the community can be planned, and will give evidence for formulating policies in this regard.

What
Description of the actions proposed and their anticipated outcomes.
You will want to refer to the emission and land use target you have chosen using the Actions & Impacts tab.
In addition, you will want to outline the mechanisms by which the world as a whole can transition to the green economy or to an alternative vision of the future you would propose instead.
Why: Rationale for the proposal
Explanation for why these actions and outcomes are desirable.
How: Feasibility of proposal
Explanation of how the proposed actions will be achieved. Teams are encouraged, but not required, to include such issues as:
- Overall global economic and environmental governance framework
- Mechanisms for financing required investments
- Role of new energy technologies and technology transfer
- Political, educational, or media interventions that can facilitate the transition
If more detailed models or spreadsheets are useful in demonstrating your proposal’s feasibility, please send them to rjl@mit.edu, and they will be reviewed and linked to your proposal.
Teams are also encouraged to note regional/national proposals that are complementary to their global proposal.
Vision of the future under this proposal
Creative depictions what life will be like later in the century if the proposal were to be adopted, using such media as videos, images, or narratives.
