Pitch

People can keep their vehicles for a 4 year term instead of 3. This will reduce the manufacturers CO2 footprint by 33%. GM won't like this.

Description

Summary

Not much more needs to be said, except this can be applied to every product produced. The resistance will be from government and big industry because we are a consumer society. Without the consumption we would have declining GDP. There must be some middle ground somewhere. It's all in the marketing. Just so you know, I have a 10 year old VW Diesel with 500,000 KM on it. Still a very respectable looking vehicle. It is also the only vehicle in our household. The manufacturers carbon footprint of this vehicle, over time, is very small compared to many.

Category of the action

Reducing consumption

What actions do you propose?

1. Keep every vehicle you own 33% longer.

2. Reduce the number of vehicles in your household by changing your lifestyle. Don't try to keep up to the Jones and be proud of it.

3. Keep it simple

Who will take these actions?

Government will resist because of cut in GDP and employment.

Big business will resist because of reduction in revenue.

Any individual who truly believes in reducing emissions, and is willing to walk the walk will get involved.

Where will these actions be taken?

The area which will get the biggest results will be in the consumer society. This is mainly the U.S. Canada and Europe.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

For every person who took this step the carbon footprint from production of the product over time would be reduced by at least 33%, because the replacement product is not required for at least another full year.

What are other key benefits?

Less CO2 being produced

What are the proposal’s costs?

For the person taking the step, a lower cost per KM in vehicle cost.

In the auto industry there would be a definite slowdown. Stepping back from consumerism will not be easy.
