July 2009 agreement by G8 calling for 50% global reduction in emissions and 80% reduction in emissions from developed countries by 2050.

Background

In July 2009, leaders of the Group of 8 (G8) countries met in L'Aquila, Italy. Climate change was a major issue on the agenda.

Emission targets

The G8 declaration issued at L'Aquila called for:

-50% emission reductions globally by 2050

-80% emission reductions in developed countries by 2050

-emission reductions "significantly below business-as usual" in developing countries

The declaration also called for "robust aggregate and individual mid-term reductions."
