Prof Jordaan is a registered professional natural scientist who also holds a PhD in agricultural economics. He distinguished himself as an expert with multi and trans-discipilnary expertise in rural and agricultural development, disaster risk and vulnerability assessment. He is currently a leading scientist on disaster and disaster risks in Africa. Andries is the Director of the Disaster Management Training and Education Centre (DiMTEC) at the University of the Free State. Under his leadership DiMTEC is today regarded as the largest post graduate centre in disaster risk science in Africa with a representative footprint from 17 African countries. Prof Jordaan is currently promotor for 14 PhD students and 5 Master students. More than 60 Master students from all over Africa already qualified under his mentorship.
Prof Jordaan has practical experience with drought risk assessments and implementation of drought risk reduction strategies as an agricultural extension officer and an entrepreneur. He has 23 years experience as a commercial mixed farmer in the Eastern Free State and was also an entrepreneur with 10 year experience in agri business management.
As a scientists he manages to bridge the gap between scientific theory and implementation. He completed research projects and consultancies in more than fourteen African countries, either as an independent consultant or in a multi disciplinary research team. He also developed and facilitated numerous short learning programs and training workshops targeting participants from various African countries. Prof Jordaan is a regular contributer and speaker at national and international conferences.
