Pete’s professional and academic experiences give him a solid foundation in collaborative, systems-thinking approaches to decision making in the context of a changing climate. Currently, Pete is a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at USAID where he works on global climate change adaptation and building resilience to a variety of shocks and stresses. Pete’s climate mitigation experience is rooted in his work with the EPA, where among other projects, he worked with a team to develop an accounting methodology for carbon dioxide emissions from the use of bioenergy feedstocks. Prior to that, Pete was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley where he found climate change to be an important driver of observed changes in bird distributions over the past 100 years. In 2009, Pete received his Ph.D. in Ecology from U.C. Davis; his research focused on the far-reaching effects of an invasive species. Before pursuing his Ph.D., Pete spent five years as a biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Throughout his work and research he endeavors to link science with policy and encourages transparency and local stakeholder engagement.
