I graduated from Brown University in 2011 with a B.S. degree in  Engineering with a focus in energy efficiency and sustainable design, and I have worked in the industry since I graduated. I am currently an Energy Efficiency Engineer at GreenerU, where I analyze the energy use of many complex buildings and provide numerous energy efficiency opportunities, including cogeneration systems, solar installations, lighting retrofits, HVAC improvements, fume hood conversion retrofits, building automation system improvements, solar walkway lighting, and many other measures.

Many clients that we work with have sophisticated building automation systems, but the systems are not fully utilized. In my year and a half a GreenerU, I have seen many systems that are not operating as designed, and the energy savings strategies are often the strategies that take the hit.  I have seen many units in override in response to heating and cooling complaints (the building operator can manually disconnect a unit from the BAS and run it 24x7, rather than scheduling it on the BAS to turn on 2 hours before occupants arrive); controls that were not properly set up to function when the building was constructed >40 years ago; points that are mapped incorrectly or do not display data; as well as numerous other issues.  Nearly every building that we audit, we find significant energy savings opportunities through troubleshooting or upgrading the BAS.

I believe that by providing enhanced education opportunities to building operators and BAS technicians, they will have the knowledge to look at the whole building as a system and understand how to optimize the energy savings opportunities in their BAS systems. I also believe that enhanced educational opportunities will empower building operators and provide them with the analytical skills to propose new control strategies and new installations to their supervisors.
